Birger Sandzen (Swedish and American, 1871–1954) immigrated to the United States at a young age, eventually settling in Lindsborg, Kansas. Sandzen is primarily known for his landscapes that were executed in oil. He was a talented and prolific printmaker and watercolorist—producing over 2,500 oil paintings and over 300 lithographs and block prints. For many years he was an art professor at Bethany College in Lindsborg. The Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery is located on the Bethany College campus and a number of his paintings are in the collection of the Beach Museum at Kansas State University.
