Mahlon Blaine (American, 1894–1969) was born in Washington County, Oregon. He is known for his macabre, bizarre, and erotic works of art. Blaine moved to California in his 20s and worked as a set designer in Hollywood. He eventually departed from movies and worked full-time as an illustrator for magazines and book collections. Blaine published over 150 illustrations in his life. However, at the time, his work received little acclaim. He moved to New York later in his career but found little success. Years after Blaine's passing, a cult following of the artist emerged after art collectors rediscovered his work.
